Selected Essays → Time, Space, and Matter in Siddhar Tradition
In Siddhar tradition, human life is understood through three interconnected dimensions: Time, Space, and Matter. These are expressed as Uzhvinai, Idavinai, and Porulvinai. Siddhars observed that every event in life happens through the interaction of these three forces. Astrology studies the movement of time, Vastu studies the influence of space, and Alchemy studies the transformation of matter. Siddhars did not see time as only a clock, space as empty, or matter as dead substance. They understood all three as living forces influencing human life, nature, and consciousness.
Uzhvinai – The Working of Time (Astrology)
Uzhvinai refers to the movement of time, destiny, and karmic cycles. In Tamil tradition, “Uzh” or “Oozh” represents the unavoidable flow of life. Birth, growth, success, suffering, and decline are all seen as movements within time. Siddhars believed that the same action can produce different results depending on the time in which it occurs. Astrology was therefore used not simply to predict events, but to understand the timing of life. Planets were observed as indicators of karmic movement and cosmic cycles. Time was not viewed as mechanical measurement alone, but as an active force shaping human experience. Uzhvinai asks the question: “When does something happen?” By understanding the movement of time, a person can live in greater harmony with the natural order instead of struggling against it.
Idavinai – The Working of Space (Vāstu)
Idavinai refers to the influence and activity of space or place. Siddhars believed that every location carries its own vibration, memory, and energetic quality. A person may feel peaceful in one environment and disturbed in another because space itself affects the body and mind. Vastu Shastra developed from this understanding. Direction, light, airflow, land structure, water flow, and surrounding atmosphere were all considered important. Siddhars did not see space as empty emptiness, but as a living field interacting continuously with life. Temples, mountains, forests, and homes were carefully understood as spaces that could support or disturb human balance. Idavinai asks the question: “Where does something happen?” When space is aligned properly, clarity and stability increase. When space is disturbed, confusion and imbalance may arise.
Porulvinai – The Working of Matter (Alchemy)
Porulvinai refers to the action and influence of matter. In Siddhar understanding, matter was never considered lifeless or inactive. Every substance was believed to contain its own energy, nature, and transformative potential. Herbs, metals, minerals, water, ash, and stones were all used carefully in Siddhar medicine and alchemical practice. Siddhars studied how substances interact with the human body, mind, and environment. Certain materials absorb energy, while others balance, strengthen, or transform it. This formed the basis of Rasavatham, or Siddhar alchemy. Poison could become medicine, and ordinary substances could become powerful remedies through correct preparation and understanding. Porulvinai asks the question: “Through what substance does change happen?” Matter was seen as condensed energy participating in the larger movement of nature and consciousness.
In conclusion, Siddhar tradition views life as the interaction of Time, Space, and Matter. Uzhvinai, Idavinai, and Porulvinai are not separate concepts but connected dimensions of existence. Together they explain how human experience is shaped through karmic movement, spatial influence, and material interaction. This understanding became the foundation for astrology, Vastu, medicine, alchemy, and spiritual practice within the Siddhar system.
